BREWERS CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: The Brewers fell to the Royals, 6-3, in a game that was delayed 22 minutes by wet grounds. Heavy rain soaked the Phoenix area overnight, and a passing storm about an hour before the scheduled start dumped even more rain and even small hail onto Maryvale Baseball Park. The grounds crew was unable to get the tarp out in time, but after a good deal of infield manicuring the game was able to be played. Manager Craig Counsell said the game was never in any jeopardy of not being played as far as he was aware. Brewers starter Zach Davies pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Milwaukee opened a 2-0 lead after two innings on a Domingo Santana RBI single and a booming home run to center by Yadiel Rivera. The Royals tied the game in the fourth and took the lead for good in the sixth. The Brewers matched the Royals with 10 hits, but Keon Broxton (triple, single) had the only multi-hit game. He’s batting .375 this spring. “He had a good day,” Counsell said. “Some good at-bats.” Cactus juice: Minor-league outfielder Ryan Cordell was born in San Diego, but he has some Wisconsin ties. His father, Tom, moved from the Chicago area to Milton as a teenager and finished out his high school years there before entering the military and eventually moving out west. “My sophomore year of high school we took a trip out there,” he said. “We went to a Brewers game. My aunt still lives outside the Milton area, and there’s her two kids and grandkids and all that, so they got to come to (Brewers On Deck). When I found out I got traded it was like, ‘Cool, I’ve got family there.’ We’re all Packer fans.” Weather: 61, partly cloudy. Scoreboard: Royals 6, Brewers 3. Record: 1-3. Wednesday: Brewers vs. Reds, 2:05 p.m., Milwaukee RHP Chase Anderson vs. Cincinnati RHP Lisalverto Bonilla. Countdown: 33 days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
