Shullsburg tops defending champs

Barneveld also gets to title game

MADISON - There won't be a repeat winner in Division 5 boys basketball this year.

Senior Hunter Matye was the high man of four teammates in double figures in Shullsburg’s 63-48 victory over defending champion Chippewa Falls McDonell on Friday in a WIAA state semifinal at the Kohl Center.

Matye, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, had 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting plus seven rebounds and seven assists for the Miners who improved to 26-2 and will face Barneveld in the title game at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.

Seniors Noah Wand (13 points), Lance Lierman (12) and Joseph Meyer (11) also reached double figures for the Miners, who rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to outscore the Macks by 21 in the second half.

Shullsburg outscored McDonell, 27-11, to start the second half. The Miners shot 63.2% (12 of 19) in the second half and 52.5% (21 of 40) overall.

McDonell (24-4) got 13 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Grayson Knowlton. The Macks shot 28.6% (8 for 28) in the second half and 33.3% (21 of 63) for the game.

Barneveld 72, Columbus Catholic 52: Senior guard Matthew Myers finished with 17 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 25-3. Myers hit 6 of 13 shots, including 5 of 8 from three-point range.

Barneveld outscored the Dons (23-5) by 16 in the second half.
