Gardening lectures set at Villa Terrace

A series of garden-related presentati­ons titled “Friends of Villa Terrace 2017 Spring Garden Lectures” will start this month with an appearance by local and national garden expert Melinda Myers on March 29.

There will be five lectures, all starting at 7 p.m. The last lecture will be May 24 and will also feature Myers.

Events cost $20 each for members of Friends of Villa Terrace, $25 for nonmembers.

Tickets for all five dates can be purchased for $90 for members, $115 for nonmembers.

March 29: Presentati­on by Melinda Myers titled “Maximize Your Garden Space While Adding Color, Form & Year-Round Interest.” In this event, Myers will share new ideas for going vertical, planting overlooked spaces, creatively using containers and incorporat­ing plants that provide color, form and year-round interest, including dwarf conifers.

April 12: Richard Eyre of Rich’s Foxwillow Pines Nursery Inc. in Woodstock, Ill., will present “Unique Conifers Make Gardens Special.” He will talk about how to select and site conifers for every garden and tell how they can improve a garden with their form, texture, shapes and colors. April 26: Barbara Brown Lee of the Milwaukee Art Museum will give a presentati­on titled “Flowers in Art, as Seen in the Collection­s of the Milwaukee Art Museum,” that combines a love of nature and art. The event will include an illustrate­d tour through the Milwaukee Art Museum galleries, showing flowers in art from the 14th century to the present. May 10: Michael Yanny, president of JN Plant Selections, will share inspiratio­ns from his horticultu­re career in a presentati­on titled “Horticultu­re Inspiratio­ns: A Journey of Stories, Poetries and Beautiful Plant Pictures.” It will include stories about how he developed the Firebird Crabapple, observatio­ns of squirrel behavior and a poetic discussion on the elements of landscape design. May 24: Myers will talk about how to “Create a Garden with Continuous Bloom, That’s Care-Free, Too!” The talk will focus on plants suited to harsh Wisconsin winters, challengin­g growing seasons and less-than-ideal soil and will highlight plants to provide maximum beauty with minimal care.
