BREWERS CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: A day after playing a game that featured 23 runs and 35 hits, the Brewers dropped a rare 1-0 game in 10 innings to the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Reliever Rob Scahill — who hadn’t allowed a run in nine appearances — surrendered a walkoff home run to Raul Mondesi Jr. to decide it. Milwaukee managed just three hits, and at least two of them were fly balls that centerfielder Lorenzo Cain lost in the sun that otherwise would have been outs. Kansas City starter Ian Kennedy allowed all three hits over six innings and struck out seven in a standout performance. “We were fortunate that there was some sun out,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “Both sides pitched very well.” Wily Peralta matched Kennedy, throwing 5 innings of three-hit, shutout ball. He also walked a pair and struck out three. “Feels good,” Peralta said. “I was able to command the strike zone with all my pitches. Tried to work ahead. Fell behind a couple guys but was able to make a quality pitch and the result was fine.” It’s been a disjointed spring for Peralta, who missed time early in camp while pitching for Team Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic and was making just his second start for the Brewers. He’s one of six pitchers vying for the remaining four spots in the rotation. “It feels good to get back to your normal routine,” said Peralta, who sports a 0.71 ERA through 12 innings. “My last outing I came out of the bullpen and it felt a little bit weird. So it feels pretty good to get back on a normal schedule. You get your normal routine going and that’s what you have to do to get ready for the season.” Also, right-hander Hiram Burgos was reassigned to minor-league camp. Burgos, who missed most of camp while pitching for Team Puerto Rico in the WBC, went 0-2 with a 17.36 ERA in three appearances (4 innings). Cactus juice: The Brewers had their first run-in with bees Saturday, as midway through the game a swarm took up residence near the roof of the ballpark behind home plate. Weather: Partly cloudy, 78. Scoreboard: Royals 1, Brewers 0, 10 innings. Record: 14-14-1. Sunday: Brewers vs. A’s, 3:05 p.m. Milwaukee RHP Matt Garza (1-0, 6.57) vs. A’s RHP Jharel Cotton (2-0, 6.55). Webcast: Brewers.com. Countdown: Eight days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
