New brewery enters; beer store exits

A new brewery enters. Hello, Broken Bat Brewing: On April 7, it becomes the first contempora­ry brewery to open in the Historic Third Ward.

A beer and bottle store exits. The Malt Shoppe, 813 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa, will close in April.

In the meantime, here are a few beer events to keep you in check, including a look ahead to an April 6 visit by Door County Brewing. Door County Brewing brings its Apricot Dude Ranch, a Belgian pale ale brewed with apricot, to Burnhearts, 2599 S. Logan Ave. The beer is the first release in a set of new seasonal beers to be released this year, and the first of four labels designed by Milwaukee artist Francisco Ramirez.

Friday: It’s D14 owner Matt McCulloch’s birthday, and he’s hosting the party. The Brewmaster’s Birthday Bash kicks off at 7 p.m. at the brewery, 2273 S. Howell Ave. The party includes new beers and ’80s and ’90s music.

Saturday: Company Brewing, 735 E. Center St., hosts No Life: Tons of Friends 02 with music, drink specials from Bittercube Bitters and merchandis­e from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Admission is $5, according to the event page on Facebook.

Sunday: Burnhearts hosts KBS in MKE, a party including Founders KBS Baltic Porter and Imperial Stout from 2 to 7 p.m. at 2599 S. Logan Ave.

Sunday: It’s a Weekend at Louie’s Release Party from 3 to 6 p.m. at Milwaukee Brewing, 613 S. 2nd St., Milwaukee. The beer is a summer sessionabl­e version of Louie’s Demise with added Rishi Organic Blueberry Rooibos and Hibiscus Tea.

Monday: Explorium Brewpub, 5300 S. 76th St., Greendale, starts draining the lines at 5 p.m. and customers win. The brewpub has 24 tap lines inside and 24 outside that each hold about 3.5 pints of beer for 168 pints to share. To facilitate the clearing, taps will sell for $2 for a half-pint pour. Crowler fills from any tap will be $5.

April 4: Romans’ Pub, 3475 Kinnickinn­ic Ave., has some of the first kegs from Boulevard Brewing. Look for Tank 7 Farmhouse, The Calling Double IPA, Tropical Pale Ale, American Kolsch, Collaborat­ion 6 (with Firestone Walker) and Rye on Rye on Rye. The party begins at 6 p.m.

April 4: Draft & Vessel, 4417 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood, also brings in Boulevard brews from 6 to 9 p.m., according to the event page at Facebook.

April 4: Merriment Social pairs 3 Floyds Gumball Head Wheat, Rabbid Rabbit Saison Ale, Necron 99 IPA, Zombie Dust Pale Ale and Crack the Sky Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout with five courses at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 a person.

April 5: Boulevard Brewing also shows up at Ray’s Growler Gallery, 8930 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa, for a launch party from 5 to 8 p.m., according to the event page at Facebook.

April 7: Comic Tyler Menz hosts a standup comedy showcase from Mojo Dojo Comedy at Urban Harvest Brewing, 1024 S. 5th St.. Performer sets are inspired by favorite books and proceeds benefit SHARP Literacy. On April 8, Urban Harvest celebrates its one-year anniversar­y.

April 8: 3 Sheeps Brewing celebrates five years of brewing beer (first in an old sock factory and now in a former soda bottling plant) with a change of scenery for its labels and a new look for its bottles. Oh, and a huge party with a special bottle release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Paid Time Off Imperial Stout brewed with toasted coconut, walnuts, and cocoa nibs and Bourbon Barrel Aged Uber Joe Imperial Stout brewed with coffee, cocoa nibs, and vanilla. The high jinks begin at 11 a.m. at the taproom, 1837 North Ave., Sheboygan.

April 13: Minneapoli­s brewery Indeed Brewing comes to Wisconsin via a road trip. Brewery representa­tives will stop at Discount Liquor, 5031 W. Oklahoma Ave., with samples of Day Tripper Pale Ale, Midnight Ryder Black IPA, B-Side Pils, Shenanigan­s Summer Ale, Mexican Honey Imperial Lager, Lavender Sunflower Honey Dates Ale, Rum Barrel Aged King Imperial Stout and Cherry Dust from 3 to 6 p.m.
