Molina close to new deal with Cardinals

-

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said he’s “hopeful” to have a new contract for Yadier Molina before opening day but said a deal was “not done.”

Molina homered in a game against St. Louis’ top minor-league affiliate while reports surfaced that he’s nearing a new contract agreement. Fox Sports reported during the game that Molina and the Cardinals are finalizing a three-year deal worth between $55 million and $65 million.

Molina has said he wants a contract finalized before the season opens Sunday night. He said “nothing’s done” after the game but expressed optimism.

“It‘s my main goal to stay here,” Molina said.

Molina, 34, is in the final year of a five-year contract.

Brantley nears return: Michael Brantley’s long climb back could be over.

The Cleveland Indians leftfielder likely will make the team’s opening-day roster following a spring in which he slowly worked himself back into shape after playing in only 11 games last year.

Brantley, traded from the Brewers in 2007 for CC Sabathia, will travel with Cleveland to Texas this weekend as the American League champion prepares to start the season Monday against the Rangers. Manager Terry Francona doesn’t have to submit his roster until Sunday, but all signs are pointing to Brantley being on it.

Brantley played in three straight Cactus League games earlier this week

Smyly will miss two months: Seattle Mariners starter Drew Smyly will begin the season on the disabled list and could be out up to two months because of a strained elbow.

Smyly likely will miss six to eight weeks with a flex strain in his left elbow. Smyly will rehab the injury and surgery is not expected

He was slotted to be Seattle’s No. 4 starter after being acquired in the off-season in a trade from Tampa Bay.
