I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (Magnolia) Raoul Peck’s Oscarnomin­ated documentar­y finishes what writer and activist James Baldwin started in 1973 with a book project about slain civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers, combining footage of Baldwin from TV interviews and lectures with Baldwin’s notes, read by Samuel L. Jackson, and scenes from footage of recent protests following the killing of African-American men by police. (PG-13; disturbing violent images, thematic material, language, brief nudity)

THE SALESMAN (Sony) A couple’s world is torn apart when the woman is attacked in their new apartment and her husband becomes obsessed with finding the attacker. Drama by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won this year’s Oscar for best foreign-language film. In Persian and English, with English subtitles. (PG-13; mature thematic elements, brief bloody image)

A DOG’S PURPOSE (Universal) A dog devoted to the humans in his life is reincarnat­ed again and again, getting chance after chance to show it. Drama based on a bestsellin­g novel, with Josh Gad as the voice of the dog and directed by Lasse Hallström. (PG; thematic material)

THE RED TURTLE (Sony) Allegorica­l animated tale about a man who, shipwrecke­d alone on an uncharted desert isle, connects with a redshelled turtle. Still-waters drama by Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit and produced by Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli was nominated this year for an Oscar for best animated feature. (PG; some thematic elements)

RINGS (Paramount) A young woman sacrifices herself when her boyfriend gets pulled into an experience involving a video that, once you’ve seen it, guarantees your death seven days later — only to discover there’s a creepier movie within the creepy movie behind all the horror. Third movie in the “Rings” series. (PG-13; violence, thematic elements, some sexuality, brief drug material)

GOLD (Anchor Bay) A prospector in pursuit of gold actually finds it in the heart of Indonesia, only to find that mining for gold isn’t as hard as hanging onto it, especially when Wall Street predators and others after it, too. Drama, based on a true story, with Matthew McConaughe­y, Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll. (R; pervasive language, some sexuality/nudity)

THE COMEDIAN (Sony) Robert De Niro as an aging, abrasive comedian trying to find his second act, with help from a woman (Leslie

Mann) he meets while doing community service. Comedy-drama directed by Taylor Hackford, with Danny DeVito, Patti LuPone, Edie Falco, Harvey Keitel. (R; pervasive language) THE RESURRECTI­ON OF GAVIN STONE (Universal) While doing community service at a megachurch, a former child star poses as a person of faith so he can land the role of Jesus in the church’s annual Passion Play. Faith-fueled movie with Brett Dalton, Neil Flynn, D.B. Sweeney. (PG; thematic elements)

TUNNEL (Well Go USA) A man is trapped in his car when a tunnel collapses, but the cost of the rescue becomes a source of contention even as time runs out. In Korean with English subtitles. (not rated)

SAVING BANKSY (Candy Factory) Documentar­y about a collector/preservati­onist’s efforts to save a work by street artist Banksy, triggering an art-world controvers­y. (not rated; language) THE SHADOW EFFECT (Momentum) A man seeks answers when his violent dreams mirror political assassinat­ions. Action movie with Cam Gigandet, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. FEAR, INC. (Sony) A company that brings people’s biggest fears to life takes on as clients four friends, who now have second thoughts.
