MU rallies to claim the crown

-

OKATIE, S.C. - It appeared the chances of Marquette winning the Big East men’s golf title were slim and none.

The Golden Eagles were a whopping 17 shots in arrears of leader DePaul entering Tuesday’s play at Callawassie Golf Club.

Then the unthinkable happened. The Golden Eagles rallied to win the tournament by one stroke over Seton Hall.

Marquette (35 over par) and Seton Hall (36 over) traded the lead over the final four holes.

MU freshman Matthew Bachmann shot an even-par 72 to win individual medalist honors with a three-day total of 216.

“We talk a lot about fighting,” Marquette coach Steve Bailey said. “Go and out and control the things you can control. Our guys went out and did it. I’m just proud of their fight.”

The charge was led by freshman Matt Murlick, who closed with a 68. Henry Klongland shot a 72 and Oliver Farrell carded a 73.

Bachmann’s final round included an eagle on the difficult par-5 sixth hole and three birdies. He began the day tied for first place with Butler’s Joey Arcuri and DePaul’s Jonathan Hewett. He finished two shots ahead of Arcuri and the Seton Hall duo of Lloyd Jefferson Go and Gen Nagai.

Marquette, which won the tournament for the third time, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championship. The Golden Eagles will learn their NCAA regional destination during the selection show at 11 a.m. Thursday on the Golf Channel.
