Charges filed in case of child driver

A Milwaukee woman accused of allowing her 8year-old son to steer a moving car faces charges of drunken driving and endangering safety.

A Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy saw a sport utility vehicle out of control on an on-ramp to Highway 145 in Milwaukee last Thursday, a complaint filed Tuesday says.

The deputy saw the child on the lap of Carrie Bernard, 37, who was in the driver’s seat while the child gripped the wheel, the complaint alleges. Then the child jumped to the passenger seat and put on his seat belt.

“I don’t want to go to jail, Mommy!” the child cried, and Bernard told him, “You’re not going to jail, just remember her face, she’s the one that did this to us,” according to the complaint.

No blood-alcohol testing has been completed yet, but the complaint alleges that Bernard performed poorly on field sobriety tests. It says Bernard has been convicted or had her license revoked in two prior driving incidents involving alcohol.

Homicide charges filed in April shooting

A 20-year-old Milwaukee man was charged Tuesday with reckless homicide in the shooting death of Jermaine Crittendon, 29, in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood.

Dajon Piltcher could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted.

A criminal complaint alleges that Piltcher was in the back seat of a stolen BMW sport utility vehicle outside a residence in the 2400 block of N. 28th St. on April 22.

When Crittendon walked up to the vehicle, Piltcher fired a Glock firearm, striking Crittendon twice in the chest, the complaint charges.

Moments before the shooting, Piltcher said something like, “Who is this dude?” and asked others in the vehicle if he, Piltcher, was “good.” The driver of the car assured him that everyone was “good.”

Crittendon died at a hospital.
