Waukesha South’s Brown in top form

- MARK STEWART

TOWN OF MERTON – Armoni Brown went 4 for 4 at the Classic 8 Conference track meet Thursday, but the Waukesha South junior wasn’t perfect.

After winning her final event, one of the Blackshirts coaches came up and gave her a hug and playfully let her know that she just missed a fourth record by one-hundredth of a second.

That would have been sweet, but Brown nonetheless left the track with a smile on her face, confident in what she could accomplish in the postseason.

“I’m going into regionals and sectionals head strong, thinking that I’m going to win this,” she said.

Brown set conference records in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 11⁄2 inches, the triple jump with a mark of 37-53⁄4 and the 400 relay (49.13). She also won the 100 in 12.27.

The 400 relay, which she ran with seniors Daeonna Johnson, Jestine Green and Kaylee Gessay, ran its fastest time of the season and a time that would rank third on the wisconsintrackonline.com state honor roll. Brown has gone faster or jumped farther in her other events, but it’s safe to say this was her best day of the season … so far.

The day also was good for the members of the Arrowhead boys and Waukesha West girls teams. They won team titles.

Brown led South to a fourth-place finish, but the Blackshirts had four other

winners: Johnson won the 100 hurdles in 15.86; Green took the 200 (25.39) and high jump (5-2); and the team of junior Grace Dargiewicz, sophomores Libby Geisness and Taya Herrera and junior Elise Boudry won the 3,200 relay in 9 minute, 59 seconds.

Waukesha West, meanwhile, won its first league title since 2006 and completed the league’s triple crown of indoor, relay and outdoor titles. The Wolverines finished with 1471⁄2 points, 14 better than Arrowhead.

West junior Becca Langer used a strong kick to finish just ahead of Arrowhead’s Megan Olshanski to win the 1,600 in 5:05.48. She also took second in the 800 and anchored the 1,600 relay

to a second-place finish. Junior Maddie Frey won the 400 in 57.89, took second in the 200 (25.50) and third in the 100 (12.54).

The team’s other victory came from senior Jayde Wollenberg, who cleared 10-6 to take the pole vault.

Arrowhead, meanwhile, spoiled Mukwonago’s bid for a triple crown, and the Warhawks did so convincingly. Arrowhead beat Mukwonago, 181-133, for the title.

Senior Cole Sandvold had a strong meet for the Warhawks, cruising to victory in the 1,600 where teammates Henry Chapman

and David Widenski took third and fourth and winning the 800 in 1:55.70, which was just off his Division 1 state-best time of 1:55.39.

Arrowhead senior Jacob Biewer took the 110 high hurdles in 15.10. He also teamed up with juniors Tyler Zimmermann, Joel Shelp and Robert Tetzlaff to win the 800 relay in 1:29.74, a time that would rank second on the state honor roll.
