MU women claim track crown

The Marquette women’s track and field team poured it on in the rain.

Monique Felix, Terica Harris and Maya Marion won individual titles as the Golden Eagles ran away with their secondstra­ight Big East outdoor championsh­ip on a rainy and windy Saturday in Villanova, Pa.

Harris, who won the long jump Friday, took the triple jump crown and was honored as the meet’s most outstandin­g field performer. Felix won gold in both the heptathlon and high jump, while placing second in the triple jump on the way to being named the meet’s highest-point scorer with 28 points. Marion became the league’s first-ever threetime winner in the shot put.

The Golden Eagles rolled up 195 points en route to victory. Villanova was second with 176.

In the men’s meet, MU’s bid for a repeat fell short. DePaul won with 205 points and the Golden Eagles were second with 183.

Freshman Sam Sagan led the decathlon heading into the final three events and wound up second.

Big Ten: Wisconsin’s Sawyer Smith took third in the decathlon in the conference meet in State College, Pa.

UW was third after the second day with 37 points. Penn State led with 42.

The UW women’s team was in 11th place. BASEBALL

James Stea drove in five runs as Valparaiso beat UW-Milwaukee, 7-4, for a doublehead­er sweep at Henry Aaron Field.

Stea homered in the opener and the Crusaders routed the Panthers (2130, 10-17 Horizon League), 11-3.

WIAC: UW-Whitewater senior Ankur Shah pitched six strong innings and Warhawks defeated visiting UW-La Crosse, 8-3, in the title game.

The Warhawks (35-7) likely will be seeded No. 1 in the Midwest Regional.

La Crosse (28-17), which rallied in the ninth to stun Whitewater in the first game, 9-8, are hoping to receive an at-large berth. The tournament field is set to be released late Sunday.
