Jetliner dumps fuel, lands safely

DETROIT - A Delta flight headed to Seoul, South Korea, had to dump fuel and return to Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Saturday after a light in the cockpit indicated there possibly was an open maintenance panel on the outside of the aircraft, a spokesman for the airline said.

Flight 159 took off from Detroit at 4:48 p.m. EDT, and about 30 minutes later the indicator light came on, Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said.

He said the plane, which had 375 passengers, circled Lake Michigan, dumping fuel for about an hour to help ensure a safe landing, which it did shortly before 7 p.m.

“They landed safely without incident,” Banstetter said.

Humpback whale escapes harbor

VENTURA, Calif. - A humpback whale that made a big splash with boaters after wandering into a Southern California harbor was on the move again Sunday after finding its way back to the open ocean.

“We have great news,” an ecstatic Ventura Harbormaster John Higgins told The Associated Press. “The whale was able to find its way out.”

Authorities may have helped it on its way by playing a continuous loop of humpback whale feeding sounds overnight near the harbor’s entrance-exit point.

The 40-foot-long creature had wowed boaters and passers-by on shore for hours Saturday after it arrived in the small fishing harbor north of Los Angeles.

Dozens walk out of Pence talk

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Dozens of graduates and family members silently stood and walked out Sunday as Vice President Mike Pence began his address at Notre Dame’s commencement ceremony.

Pence, the former governor of Indiana, was invited to speak after Notre Dame students and faculty protested the prospect of President Donald Trump being invited to become the seventh U.S. president to give the commencement address.

Pence spoke briefly of Trump, praising his speech to the leaders of 50 Arab and Muslim nations earlier in the day in Saudi Arabia.
