Longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer and former Texas coach Mack Brown, along with former players Charles Woodson, Ed Reed and Calvin Johnson, are among those making their first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot this year.

The ballot released Thursday by the National Football Foundation includes 75 players and six coaches who competed in the Football Bowl Subdivisio­n of the NCAA. An additional 98 players and 31 coaches from lower divisions and NAIA are also up for considerat­ion.

The newest Hall of Fame class will be announced Jan. 8 in Atlanta.

SOFTBALL Kelly Barnhill gave up just three hits to help Florida roll past Texas A&M, 8-0, in five innings, the opening day of the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Barnhill (25-3), USA Softball’s national player of the year, struck out five in four innings. She threw 30 pitches in the first and escaped trouble, then threw 46 pitches in her final three innings for top-seeded Florida (56-8). LSU 2, UCLA 1: Constance Quinn scored the winning run on an obstructio­n call as the Tigers edged the Bruins. The game was tied at a run apiece in the fifth inning when Quinn scored on a single by Amber Serrett. Quinn was tagged out before the obstructio­n call against UCLA catcher Paige Halstead at the plate.

Just three months past his 17th birthday, Josh Sargent tied the American scoring record at the Under-20 World Cup as the United States routed New Zealand, 6-0, Wednesday night at Incheon, South Korea, and advanced to a quarterfin­al against Venezuela.

Sargent put the Americans ahead in the 32nd minute with his fourth goal of the tournament.
