Laconia produces a perfect ending

D3 title school’s third straight

- MARK STEWART

Laconia won its third straight Division 3 state title Saturday, but the Spartans also went back to back.

Their 5-0 victory over Weyauwega-Fremont completed their second straight undefeated season.

Senior pitcher Kayla Schwebke struck out 10, allowed just three hits and scored her 22nd shutout of the season. The team, which finished 25-0 and extended its winning streak to 61 games, also got two runs batted in from senior catcher Payton Kastenschmidt.

Weyauwega-Fremont, which made its first state appearance since 2009, finished the year 22-10.

Laconia scored the only run it would need in the second inning when a bunt single by sophomore Hailey Bartz started a two-out rally. She advanced to third and later came home thanks to defensive errors.

Laconia added some insurance in the fourth when Kastenschmidt drove in the team’s second run with a double and sophomore Abby Luczak drove in the third run with a single up the middle.

That was more than enough for the Spartans, who allowed just three runs once this season. DIVISION 2
