SPEAK OUT LETTERS FROM OUR READERS King girls star at state track meet again

The Milwaukee Rufus King girls track and field team recently repeated as state champions. This is a significant accomplishment for that team and the school.

I actually believe that their accomplishment also is a great victory for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Given the many myriad of problems which plague MPS, any news of excellence is a huge positive.

My wife is a teacher at MPS and she often tells me of the overwhelming obstacles she faces every day trying to educate students. She readily admits that the job is tough and very stressful, but she perseveres and it shows in her classroom.

I view the King state championship victory as the type of perseverance MPS needs. Those athletes may not know it, but their victory has revealed that excellence is possible at MPS. Congratulations on being crowned state champions and most of all, thank you for putting MPS in a positive light. Mario D. Johnson Sr. Milwaukee Project on Erin Hills’ history was fantastic

Kudos to Gary D’Amato and the entire Journal Sentinel team for the detailed series concerning the young and fascinating history of Erin Hills.

Readers are well-informed and prepared to enjoy the upcoming U.S. Open. The detail provided by D’Amato was rich, well-sourced and highly entertaining.

Over the years, Wisconsin has proven to be an incredible natural resource of great golf courses and architecture. American Society of Golf Course Architect members have been proud to design Erin Hills, Sand Valley, Whistling Straits, Black Wolf Run and so many other courses.

Thank you for bringing the story of Erin Hills to your readers, and we are all excited to enjoy the upcoming U.S. Open in your state. John Sanford West Palm Beach, Fla. Erin Hills will be showcased during U.S. Open

Wisconsin is getting ready to host its first U.S. Open at Erin Hills, a truly historic event for our state

I first met Bob Lang, the founder and developer of the vast property, in 2004. We toured the layout with its rough definition of the golf course to come and he asked, “Can you see Tiger Woods and Adam Scott walking up the 18th fairway in the U.S. Open?”

Now 13 years later in its maturity, the course will be on display for the world to see. It all started with Lang’s vision and creative involvement. His determination and dogged energy were evident in making it happen.

Thanks to Andy Ziegler for acquiring the course from Lang. It has been refined and will be as perfect as it can get for an Open. The course with its glacial formations, slopes, valleys, fescue and length will be a great test.

Lang deserves nothing less than an enormous thank you. And as we hear the roars from all corners of the course during the tournament, we hope there will be a big smile on his face and well-deserved pride in his heart.
