PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

- BY TOM HAUDRICOURT

Gennett had a game for the ages Tuesday night against St. Louis, slugging four home runs and driving in 10 runs. He was the first player in MLB history to have five hits, including four homers, and 10 RBI in the same game. Anderson has been on the best roll of his career, allowing no runs in his last three starts, covering 21 2⁄3 innings. He has allowed only 10 hits and five walks over that span while logging 22 strikeouts. BREWERS THIS WEEK The Brewers finish their string of 10 consecutive games vs. NL West opponents in Arizona and then get a breather Monday before a day-night doubleheader in St. Louis on Tuesday. The first game is a makeup of a rainout the first time the Brewers visited the Cardinals in May. DID YOU KNOW? On Saturday, Oakland and Tampa Bay played the first regularlyscheduled doubleheader in the majors since 2011 (Angels at A’s on July 17) and just the third since May 2001. YOU FIGURE IT OUT Under revised replay rules this season, managers must tell umpires within 30 seconds if they will challenge a call. But Pittsburgh’s Clint Hurdle got an additional minute last Sunday against the New York Mets to review a play in the top of the seventh at Citi Field. Why the extra time? The singing of “God Bless America” started before Hurdle’s 30-second window closed, so everything was put on hold for that patriotic moment. When the song was done, Hurdle issued his challenge and was successful in overturning the call. QUOTE “He is a rare breed from the standpoint of just the sheer force he hits the ball with.” —– Miami manager Don Mattingly, on slugger Giancarlo Stanton (left).
