RB commits to Wisconsin

- From Journal Sentinel wire reports Jeff Potrykus

Nakia Watson, a 6-foot, 220-pound running back from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, has given Wisconsin an oral commitment for the 2018 freshman class.

Watson announced his decision Saturday on Twitter.

He rushed for 1,645 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior and had offers from SMU, Nevada and several Group of Five schools, including Harvard.

Watson is UW’s 11th known commitment for the ’18 class.

TRACK AND FIELD UW’s Sarah Disanza finished seventh in the 5,000 meters to earn All-American honors at the NCAA championships in Eugene, Ore.

Disanza’s time of 15 minutes, 48.51 seconds is the fifth best in program history.

UW sophomore Emma Haugen finished 21st in the high jump to be an honorable mention All-American. Haugen bowed out after grazing the bar on her third attempt at 5 feet, 10 inches.

SAILING

First a capsize and then a man overboard. It’s been a dramatic week in the America’s Cup challenger eliminations on Bermuda’s Great Sound, and the main event is still a week away.

It wasn’t just any man overboard Saturday. It was a skipper, Nathan Outteridge of Sweden’s Artemis Racing, who fell overboard during a tack in Race 3 of the challenger finals, allowing Emirates Team New Zealand to sail ahead and take a 2-1 lead in the bestof-nine series.

Outteridge slipped and flew off the boat as the six-man crew went through its quick, choreographed sprint to change sides while the 50-foot foiling catamaran was turning while going about 27 knots on the fifth of seven legs.

Two crewmen were the first to move from the starboard hull to the port hull. Then came Outteridge and another crewman. The boat began to straighten and there went the skipper, sliding off the back beam and into the sound.

TENNIS

Maria Sharapova is skipping the grass-court season and will not try to qualify for Wimbledon because she has not recovered from an injured left thigh.

The five-time major champion and former No. 1ranked player announced in a posting on her official Facebook account that “an additional scan” showed that the muscle tear she got at the Italian Open last month will not allow her to return to competition yet.

BASEBALL Addison Russell returned to the Chicago Cubs’ lineup on Saturday, two days after Major League Baseball began an investigation of the all-star shortstop in the wake of domestic violence allegations.

Russell’s wife, Melisa, posted a photo Wednesday on Instagram with a caption suggesting he was unfaithful to her. In another post, a person — described as Melisa’s close friend — accused Russell of “mentally and physically abusing her.”
