UPS worker kills 3 co-workers, self

SAN FRANCISCO - A UPS employee armed with an assault weapon opened fire Wednesday inside one of the company’s San Francisco packing facilities, killing three co-workers before fatally shooting himself as employees fled franticall­y into the streets shouting “shooter” and police swarmed in, authoritie­s and witnesses said.

Amid a barrage of gunfire, some workers sought refuge on the roof of the four-story facility, while others ran outside and pounded on the windows of a public bus, witnesses said.

“They were screaming, ‘Go! Go! Go!’ ” said Jessica Franklin, 30, who was riding to work when the bus made a regular stop in front of the UPS facility. “As they got on the bus, they were all ducking.”

Two other United Parcel Service employees were wounded in the shooting. A San Francisco Police Department official identified the shooter as Jimmy Lam of San Francisco.

Death toll in Bangladesh landslides hits 140

DHAKA, Bangladesh - Rescuers went from door to door searching for informatio­n on people who might be missing Wednesday after massive landslides crashed onto villages and killed at least 140 in southeaste­rn Bangladesh, officials said.

With some roads collapsed and others blocked by mud, soldiers were erecting a portable bridge to reach the worst-hit district of Rangamati, where government shelters housed about half the 4,500 people whose homes were swamped by mud and debris unleashed by the landslides Tuesday.

U.S. blames N. Korea for cyberattac­ks

WASHINGTON - U.S. officials are blaming the North Korean government for a series of cyberattac­ks dating to 2009 against media, aerospace, financial sectors and infrastruc­ture in the United States and across the world.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning this week, saying the cyberattac­ks were carried out by actors within the North Korean government, known as “Hidden Cobra.” The alert says the agencies believe Hidden Cobra will continue to use cyber operations to advance their government’s military and strategic objectives.

The cyberattac­ks targeted weaknesses in Microsoft Corp. operating systems and Adobe Systems Inc.’s Flash software, which were patched in January and June, respective­ly.

Attack kills 17 in Somalia: Gunmen posing as military forces were holding an unknown number of hostages inside a popular restaurant in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, in an attack that began when a car bomb exploded Wednesday at the gate, police and a witness said, while the extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibi­lity. At least 17 people, including foreigners, were dead, police and an ambulance driver said.
