Taurasi sets WNBA mark

- From Journal Sentinel wire reports

Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi became the WNBA career scoring leader Sunday, surpassing Tina Thompson who had held the record since 2010. Taurasi, 35, in her 13th WNBA season, picked up the final 14 points she needed against the Los Angeles Sparks during a 90-59 loss at Staples Center to move past Thompson, who scored 7,488 points in 17 seasons before retiring after the 2013 season.

Thompson played for Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle during her WNBA career (496 games). Taurasi has been with the Mercury for her entire career (377 games).

The record breaker came with 45.3 seconds left in the first half on a driving layup.

NBA

Paul George’s agent, Aaron Mintz, told the Indiana Pacers that his star client plans to leave the team during free agency in the summer of 2018 and prefers to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report from The Vertical.

Heading to the Lakers would put George, who will make $19.5 million in 2017-’18, close to his hometown of Palmdale, Calif.

As a free agent in 2018, George, 27, can sign a maximum deal with another team for four years worth $131.58 million. The Pacers can offer him a five-year, $177.48 million contract.

AUTO RACING

Veteran German driver Timo Bernhard led Porsche to a dramatic third straight win at the 24 Hours Le Mans race to prevent a huge upset win for the lesser category Oreca team on Sunday.

After a series of mishaps to pre-race favorites Porsche and Toyota, the LMP2 category Oreca suddenly found itself in the lead with 19-year-old Frenchman Thomas Laurent behind the wheel three hours from the end of the grueling endurance race.

But the 36-year-old Bernhard overtook the Oreca with about 1 hour remaining.
