An unpatriotic attack
The American Constitution is the font from which “American exceptionalism” flows. However, there is now an unpatriotic attack on our Constitution by moneyed interests calling for a constitutional convention disguised as a desire for a balanced budget amendment (Assembly urges balanced federal budget,” June 15).
It’s unpatriotic because if the concern were truly for a balanced budget amendment, there would be a call to follow the normal path instead of a constitutional convention. And why is it that only wealthy special interests are pushing a constitutional convention? Is it because they are not satisfied by the corporate takeover of our democracy that President Donald Trump symbolizes with all his Goldman Sachs appointments?
They want a constitutional convention to open up our Constitution to wholesale changes. These changes could range from the abolishment of checks and balances, which hampers the corporate takeover of our government, to the repeal of the Bill of Rights. Do we want America to become another kleptocracy like North Korea or another Turkey, which has slipped from a democracy to authoritarianism?
Unpatriotic members of the Assembly voted for a measure produced by out-of-state interests and against our Constitution. It’s time for the state Senate to be true patriots and vote to preserve and protect the Constitution.
