QB Carr close to new deal
Derek Carr appears to be close to a substantial payday.
The Oakland Raiders are deep into negotiations with the quarterback on a contract extension, a source told USA TODAY Sports.
In a tweet earlier Wednesday, Carr confirmed that nothing had been completed.
Carr, 26, led the Raiders to their first playoff birth since 2002 last year but suffered a broken left fibula in the penultimate game of the regular season. He told USA TODAY Sports’ Jarrett Bell this month that he had “completely gotten over” the injury.
A second-round pick out of Fresno State in 2014, Carr has thrown for 81 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in three years as a starter. He was a Pro Bowl selection the last two seasons.

Edmonton captain Connor McDavid has won his first Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player.
McDavid claimed the award Wednesday night at the NHL’s annual postseason awards show at T-Mobile Arena, the new home of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. The league also revealed the results of the Golden Knights’ expansion draft.
McDavid’s victory capped a breakthrough sophomore season for the 20-year-old center, who won the league scoring title and led the Oilers back to the Stanley Cup playoffs after an 11-year absence.
Boston center Patrice Bergeron won the Selke Trophy for the fourth time as the NHL’s best defensive forward, and San Jose’s Brent Burns won his first Norris Trophy as the top defenseman. Toronto center Auston Matthews easily took the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, and Columbus goalie
Sergei Bobrovsky won his second Vezina Trophy. MLB

Field told The Associated Press that Reidy-Russell has decided not to talk with Major League Baseball about its ongoing review because it’s not in the best interest of her family.
Earlier this month, Reidy-Russell posted a photo on her Instagram account with a caption suggesting her husband had been unfaithful to her.

NFL
New York Jets linebacker David Harris, who was released earlier this month, is joining the New England Patriots. Harris, a veteran of 10 NFL seasons and perhaps the Jets’ steadiest player since he was drafted in 2007, agreed to a two-year deal.
Harris, who’s averaged nearly 110 tackles per year, could start alongside linebacker Dont’a Hightower in New England’s base defense.
