AROUND THE AREA

Tennis awards: The Wisconsin High School Tennis Coaches Association named Kettle Moraine’s Brett Roecker and Racine Prairie’s Nich Schafer as its Division 1 and Division 2 state coaches of the year.

Roecker led the Lasers to the state tournament in a season that began with him trying to replace six graduated seniors from a team that was the sectional runner-up. The Lasers reached state as a 10-man team that included seven players who hadn't played tennis until they got to high school.

Schafer, who also was named the Journal Sentinel’s coach of the year last week, led the Hawks to their first state title in their first appearance.

Changes at Cedarburg: New Bulldogs athletic director Jon Hannam announced three new coaches: Chris Karpin, a former MSOE assistant, is the girls cross country coach; Brian Marcks, who coached middle school track and field in the district, is the new boys track and field coach; and Jake Brown, an assistant girls track coach this past season, is that program's new head coach.

AROUND THE STATE

Honored: Onalaska's Austin Glynn has been named the Gatorade state boys track and field athlete of the year. The senior won the Division 1 state title in the shot put with a throw of 62 feet 31⁄2 inches and took second in the discus with a mark of 181-4.

Glynn’s top discus throw of the season (209-9) was the best in the state this season and would have ranked sixth in the athletic.net’s national rankings if it were listed.

WHERE THEY ARE NOW

Hired: Grambling State hired Milwaukee Hamilton alum Donte Jackson as its men’s basketball coach.

Jackson, who graduated from Hamilton in 1997, goes to Grambling from Division II Stillman College in Alabama, where he went 66-21 in three seasons. He guided the school to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2016 and won an NCAA Division II Tournament game.

Won: Hartford graduate Sam Noennig won the USA Track & Field junior national title in the shot put. She won with a throw of 55 feet 3⁄4 inches. Noennig, who competes for Arizona State but redshirted this year, competed in the USA Youth track and field championship two years ago and finished eighth.
