Dick’s Sporting Goods wants to open a store in Greenfield, just north of Southridge Mall.

Dick’s would lease space in a retail building at 5070 S. 74th St., formerly used by the Sportmart chain before that business closed, said Chuck Erickson, Greenfield community development manager.

That building, near the northeast corner of W. Edgerton Ave. and S. 74th St., is part of the Greenfield Place shopping center, he said.

While a sporting goods store is a permitted use within the building, Dick’s needs a special use permit from the city to sell firearms, Erickson said Wednesday.

The Plan Commission is to review that special use permit request at its Tuesday meeting, Erickson said.

A company spokesman couldn’t be immediately reached for more information about the proposed store.

Dick’s opened its first Milwaukee-area store in 2008 at the Grafton Commons shopping center. It has since opened stores at The Mayfair Collection shopping center in Wauwatosa in 2014 and The Corridor office and retail development in Brookfield in 2016.

Erickson said Dick’s had initially planned to open a store at Greenfield’s 84 South mixed-use development.

84 South is being developed on 48 acres bordered by I-894, W. Layton Ave., S. 84th St. and S. 92nd St. It will feature stores, including Kohl’s, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Steinhafel’s Furniture; Portillo’s and other restaurants; an Aurora Health Care facility and 268 apartments.
