Mack eyes record

-

After two straight seasons with all-pro honors and winning the AP Defensive Player of the Year last season, Khalil Mack has set his goals for 2017 quite high.

He just wasn’t expecting Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to make public his quest for 30 sacks, which would crush Michael Strahan’s NFL record of 221⁄2 set in 2001 and might seem a bit out of reach to most outsiders.

“I didn’t want him to tell everybody else,” the Oakland defensive end said. “But at the same time, D.C., he knows how hard we work, what kind of work we put in, and he knows what I want but at the same time. Realistically, we just want to get the record at least.”

Mack’s career high in sacks is 15 set in his second season back in 2015. He had only 11 last season.

Chargers coach clears air: Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said he hasn’t forbidden Philip Rivers or Antonio Gates from attending former teammate LaDainian Tomlinson’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend.

But Lynn also didn’t say whether Rivers and Gates will instead be at the Chargers’ joint practice Saturday with the Los Angeles Rams at Stub Hub Center.

The workout is the Chargers’ first team activity in their new home stadium.

“I’ve talked to Philip, I’ve talked to Antonio (and) I’ve even talked to L.T.,” Lynn said. “We’re all on the same page. At the end of the day, we’re going to make the best decision for our football team, and that’s it.”

Rivers said he won’t travel to Canton for the ceremony honoring Tomlinson, the Chargers’ longtime star running back. Gates hasn’t said where he will be.
