5. BROOKFIELD EAST

The locomotive known as Sam Santiago-Lloyd has moved on to the college ranks, but the Spartans train will continue to roll.

The defending Division 2 state champions graduated last year’s area player of the year and a handful of other standouts, but expectations remain high at East. Thanks to what is predicted to be an outstanding defense and some blossoming talents on offense, the team is expected to put forth a formidable defense of its title.

And that defense will start with defense.

“You’ve got a three-year starter in (end) Caleb Wright, a three-year starter in (linebacker) Brad Dati, a three-year starter in (lineman) Ron Edwards,” East coach Ben Farley said. “By no means do we have to start from scratch.”

On the other side of the ball, Farley will count on two returning allconference linemen in seniors Everett Cartier and Adam Streich, senior Justin Parbs, an all-conference all-purpose back, and the 6foot-4, 240-pound Wright, who will get more chances to carry the ball this season.

Though Santiago-Lloyd’s running was key to the team’s title run, he missed a considerable amount of time due to injury. The team had to find ways to win without him, experience that could pay off this season.

“There are guys who maybe didn’t have the opportunity last year who have the opportunity now," Farley said. "We’ve got some younger players as well who will step in and have that opportunity. We’ve got four guys who could fill that running back spot. Some seniors, some sophomores and we’ve got a good mix of power and speed."
