PIET’S CONCERT PICK FOR THE WEEKEND

- — Piet Levy, plevy@journalsentinel.com

LA SANTA CECILIA

Style: A colorful cumbia center, with Afro-Cuban, bossa nova, bolero, rancheras, mariachi, jazz, R&B and rock around the edges.

Backstory: When it formed in Los Angeles in 2007, La Santa Cecilia was very much a local band, largely playing coffee houses and block parties, and even inviting area fans to decorate CD covers for its debut EP. But between the band’s skill with a variety of sounds — including fresh covers of “Tainted Love” and U2’s “One” — and frontwoman Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez’s marvelous voice, La Santa Cecilia expanded its fan base, and earned a Grammy for best Latin rock, urban or alternative album in 2014 for its debut LP, “Treinta Dias.”

Why you should go?: La Santa Cecilia has a lovely new covers album, “Amar Y Vivir,” to draw from, but this headlining appearance at Mexican Fiesta will be particularly special for another reason. In February 2015, the band came to Milwaukee to record a song — “Caminante Nocturno” from its Grammy-nominated album “Buenaventura” — with the Latino Arts String Program. (The band had befriended the students and program director Dinorah Marquez at a Milwaukee gig a few months prior.) For the first time, La Santa Cecilia and the String Program will be able to perform that gorgeous waltz together in concert.

When and where: 8 p.m. Friday, El Rey/Rosen Motors Stage. Mexican Fiesta, Maier Festival Park, 200 N. Harbor Drive.

Price: $16 at the box office.
