Back to school in style.

You’ve gone through your school supply list and checked it twice. Now, it’s time to make sure your back-to-school wardrobe is also in check.

Christy Schwacher, owner of Free Bird in the Third Ward and Muskego, offers tips on how to dress for the semester, as well as what summer trends are carrying into the fall.

Too much denim? No such thing.

“Denim in all forms is still very hot for fall,” Schwacher said. She recommends jeans and skirts with interesting, destructed hems. Long denim jackets that reach the thigh have also been in high demand at her shop.

Tops

The lace-up tops you’ve been seeing everywhere from festivals to the mall aren’t going anywhere. If they don’t meet the dress code, throw a bandeau or tank underneath.

Retro tops with high necklines, lace and ruffle details are also in, Schwacher said. Because these tops are so elaborate, she suggests pairing them with a solid-colored pant.

Pants

It’s time to free the ankle with comfy, wide-leg palazzo pants. If you’re wearing a patterned pair, make sure to don a simpler top. If you want your shirt to shine, try these pants in a jewel tone, Schwacher said.

Skirts

One skirt that will probably never be considered too short is the midi, and luckily, it’s in style. These skirts hit below the knee and right above the ankle.

If you’re into minis, the faux suede skirts with buttons and pocket details we saw last fall and winter are back again.

Dresses

“They’re still going to have bohemian flare,” Schwacher said. Expect lots of offthe-shoulders in early fall. Otherwise, it’s ruffles and lace all the way.

Jackets

It may still be pushing 80 degrees, but soon you’ll need to throw on an extra layer before heading out the door for class. Motorcycle jackets in pleather or suede can top off almost any ensemble. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try a jacket in a bold pattern.

For your feet

If you invested in a pair of over-the-knee boots last year, you’ll be able to get some more use out of them. They’re still in, along with pattern booties. If you’re dressing up, Schwacher said a chunky heel is very hot right now. If you’re sporting a sportier look, you can’t go wrong with Adidas or Nike, she said.

To finish the look

No look is complete without a little accessorizing. For jewelry, anything with tassels or balls will work, Schwacher said. For purses, she suggests saddlebags and bucket bags. “Scarves are not as big,” Schwacher said. But if you do want to wear one, try a skinnier necktie, reminiscent of flight attendants from the ’50s, she said.

Fall colors

“The pink nude tones that were popular this summer carry into the fall,” Schwacher said. She described these tones as the new neutrals. Rust is also a big color for the upcoming season.

Prints and patterns

Snakeskin and leopard print are fall staples, Schwacher said. The floral patterns and appliqués that have been prominent since spring are still in. Just make sure they’re in deeper tones, she said. In a sea of cropped denim jackets, stand out with one that reaches the thigh.
