Whitewater tripped on road in season opener

UW-Whitewater started its season on the wrong foot as a lost fumble on a first-and-goal play from the Illinois Wesleyan 1-yard line contribute­d to a 17-10 loss Saturday in Bloomingto­n, Ill.

The No. 3-ranked Warhawks erased a seven-point deficit when Canton Larson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cole Wilber with 4:35 left in the third quarter.

But the Titans were able to break the tie on Jack Healy’s 5-yard touchdown reception that capped a 14-play, 70yard drive with 8:02 left in the game.

Whitewater punted on its next series but got the got the ball back at its 44 with 3:48 to play.

Wilber proceeded to complete four passes, and then his 16-yard run gave Whitewater first-and-goal at the 1. But the Warhawks’ hopes to tie the game ended there as they lost a fumble on the next play and Wesleyan was able to run out the clock.

UW-Oshkosh 23 John Carroll 17: Dylan Hecker rushed for 186 yards in 28 carries and scored three touchdowns in leading the fourth-ranked Titans to a season-opening victory over the Blue Streaks in University Heights, Ohio.

The Titans held a 14-point lead until John Carroll scored a touchdown with 3:22 remaining.

But Oshkosh made sure the Blue Streaks didn’t get the ball back, picking up a critical first down on a fourthand-2 play.

UW-Stevens Point 34, St. Norbert 33 (2OT): Jonte Webb scored on a 25yard touchdown catch and Hayden Neidert added the extra point in the second extra session as the Pointers persevered against the visiting Green Knights.

St. Norbert had the ball first in the period and got an 11-yard scoring catch from Samuel Staehling, but Spenser Thompson-Meyers’ extra point was blocked.

UW-Stout 17, Simpson 0: Keyshawn Carpenter had a 1-yard touchdown run and Brian Sandifer a 26-yard touchdown reception as the Blue Devils quieted the Storm in Indianola, Iowa.

St. Thomas (Minn.) 47, UW-Eau Claire 13: After J.T. DenHartog scored on a 65-yard run to give the Blugolds the early lead, it was all Tommies as they scored the next 42 points to run away with the victory in St. Paul.

Coe (Iowa) 13, UW-River Falls 9: A comeback attempt by the host Falcons was turned aside when Ben Beckman’s pass on first-and-goal at the Cohawks’ 8 was intercepte­d by Clevon Catchings with 1:01 remaining.

UW-Plattevill­e 30, George Fox (Ore.) 28: Michael Pratl’s 27-yard field goal with 1:41 remaining gave the 15thranked Pioneers a season-opening victory over the visiting Bruins.

Concordia (Ill.) 28, Ripon 20: Shane Virnala threw four touchdown passes in leading the Cougars past the host RedHawks.

Presentati­on 40, Lawrence 10: The Saints scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game against the Vikings in Appleton.

Carthage 24, Aurora 0: Lafayette McCary rushed for 110 yards and a score and the Red Men’s defense held the host Spartans to a measly 116 yards of total offense.

Concordia 42, Finlandia (Mich.) 6: Isaiah Tenette returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and Aaron Nixon threw for three scores and rushed for two more as the Falcons opened with a taming of the Lions in Mequon.
