Stout stuns St. Thomas

J. Dan Sturgeon threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Josh Malone with 1 minute 27 seconds remaining in the game as UW-Stout stunned fourthrank­ed St. Thomas (Minn.), 25-22, on Saturday in Menomonie.

The Blue Devils (2-0) started their winning drive in good field position at the St. Thomas 42 and took just four plays before Sturgeon, a sophomore making his first collegiate start, found Malone for the winner.

The Tommies (1-1) never mounted a threat on the ensuing drive.

Sturgeon finished with 248 yards with three touchdown tosses and a pair of intercepti­ons.

UW-Oshkosh 74, Virginia-Lynchburg 7: Brett Kasper threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the No. 3 Titans (2-0) to a rout of the visiting Dragons (0-3).

Concordia (Minn.) 25, UW-Whitewater 17: The 15th-ranked Warhawks had two chances to score the 1-yard line with less than a minute remaining, but they were stuffed both times as they fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1999 with their loss to the Cobbers (2-0) in Moorhead, Minn.

UW-La Crosse 45, Ripon 14: Tarek Yaeggi and Nick Holcomb hooked up on four touchdown passes as the Eagles (2-0) soared over the host Red Hawks (0-2).

Benedictin­e 29, St. Norbert 7: The Green Knights (0-2) were held to 196 yards of total offense as they were shredded by the Eagles (1-1) in De Pere.

Lawrence 27, Finlandia 22: Philip Santiago rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another in steering the Vikings (1-1) ahead of the Lions (0-2) in Hancock, Mich.

Knox 35, Beloit 17: Ben Sposito threw for 195 yards and a touchdown for the Buccaneers (0-2), but he threw an intercepti­on and was sacked four times in a loss to the Prairie Fire (2-0) in Galesburg, Ill.

Augsburg 38, Concordia 16: The Falcons (1-1) had no answer for quarterbac­k Quin Frisell, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more in leading the Auggies (2-0) in Minneapoli­s.
