A Madison man led police on a wild nine-mile chase on and off I-94 early Sunday, before finally hitting stop sticks, ramming a squad car and resisting arrest until he was tasered, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven P. Dixon Jr., 24, is now facing a long list of potential charges including drunken driving, fleeing an officer, recklessly endangering safety and traffic violations.

According to a sheriff’s news release:

Shortly after 3 a.m., a deputy noticed Dixon “deviating unsafely in lanes of traffic” on westbound I-94 near Hawley Road. When he failed to for the deputy’s lights and siren, the deputy radioed ahead for assistance from Brookfield police and Waukesha sheriff’s deputies, and requested that a stop stick — a metal device that punctures tires — be placed in the driver’s path.

Dixon exited at Moorland Road, then promptly re-entered the freeway. Waukesha deputies put out the stop sticks at Barker Road, farther west. Dixon and the pursuing Milwaukee sheriff’s deputy ran over the devices.

But instead of stopping, Dixon spun out and then began heading back east in the westbound lanes of I-94.

Near Calhoun Road, he crossed over to the eastbound lanes and exited at Moorland Road and drove into the parking lot at the Country Inn & Suites hostop tel, where he rammed a Waukesha County deputy’s squad car. Then he got out and began running.

Two Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputies chased and finally tackled Dixon, who resisted until he was tasered and finally arrested.

Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt commended all the officers involved in Dixon’s arrest.

“The reckless abandonment of life and propMeanwhile, erty by lawbreakers will be aggressively pursued by our agency,” he said.

Two Milwaukee County deputies suffered cuts and bruises, and one of them a possible hamstring tear. Dixon was taken to a hospital for minor injuries, “Taser aftercare” and a blood draw.

The Sheriff’s Office said Dixon is on probation for fraud, disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and possession of cocaine.
