Hayward: Birkie Trail Run Festival. Run instead of ski along the famous Birkie Trail Sept. 30. Distances range from a 1-kilometer walk for kids to a 100-kilometer ultra marathon. All distances start and finish at the Birkie Ridge Trailhead on Highway 63 north of Seeley. See birkie.com.

La Crosse: Oktoberfes­t USA. La Crosse celebrates Oktoberfes­t Sept. 28Oct. 1 with carnival rides, ethnic foods, German entertainm­ent, live music and beer. Admission buttons are $10. See oktoberfes­tusa.com.

Mineral Point: Cornish Festival. Celebrate Mineral Point's Cornish heritage at this festival Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Enjoy arts and crafts, kids activities, Cornish food, history tours and more. See cornishfes­t.org. Minocqua: Beef-A-Rama. The smells of roasting beef will fill Torpy Park on Sept. 30. Other activities include live music Sept. 29, a 5K and 10K Rump Roast Run and Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 30, roast beef sandwich sales, a beef eating contest, a petting zoo, a parade and live music on two stages. See minocqua.org. Shawano: Bike the Barn Quilts & 5K Walk/Run. Bike scenic routes ranging from 5 to 70 miles around Shawano County to see barn quilts on Sept. 30. The longer routes kick off at 8 a.m., the shorter routes at 9 and the 5K walk/run at 9:30. All leave from Memorial Park in Shawano. Registrati­on is $30 per person or $65 for a family. See shawanopat­hways.org. Wausau: Fall Colors Comet Sky Ride. Ride the Comet Sky Ride chair lift to the top of Rib Mountain at Granite Peak Ski Area for a view of the area's changing colors. Rides are offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 22. Tickets are $11; kids ages 3 to 5 are free. See skigranite­peak.com.
