Great Midwestern Pie Championship

Bakers, start your ovens: Honeypie Cafe’s second annual Great Midwestern Pie Championship is Oct. 14, during the Beet Street Harvest Festival in Bay View. The contest has three categories: best apple pie (the main filling ingredient must be apples; the crust can be any type); best Wisconsin-inspired pie (it must feature Wisconsin ingredients); and best chocolate pie. Bakers should complete a registration form online at

honeypiecafe.com, found under the pie championship tab, before Oct. 12. To enter a different way, email bakeshop@honeypiecafe.com. Pies must be 9 or 10 inches in diameter, made completely from scratch and submitted with a list of ingredients. They must be dropped off between 10 a.m. and noon Oct. 14 at Palomino, 2491 S. Superior St. Judging is at 12:30 p.m.; winners will be announced about 2:30 at the Beet Street music stage. Rules are at the Honeypie website. The entry fee is $10, paid when the pies are dropped off. For amateurs, prizes are $200 for best in show; first-, second- and third-place winners will receive gift certificates to Honeypie. Winners in the professional division win bragging rights; they don’t pay an entry fee, but slices of their pies left after judging will be sold to the public at the festival. Proceeds benefit the Fondy Food Center, a nonprofit organization that operates farmers markets and supports small farmers. The Beet Street festival is noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 in the 2400 block of S. Wentworth Ave., with music by bands and DJs and food from neighborhood restaurants. — Carol Deptolla
