Inner City Sportsmen Club honored

- PAUL A. SMITH

The Inner City Sportsmen Club was honored with a state citation this year for the group's role in connecting Milwaukee residents, especially youth, to the outdoors.

The club was recognized for "getting inner city kids outdoors by teaching them about fishing and hunting and showing them where to go" and "partnering with other organizations that serve urban youth, by reaching out to schools, the elderly and to church groups in order to share their delight for the field of outdoor recreation."

The award was presented to the club in August by state Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee).

"There's no question that hunting and fishing and Wisconsin outdoor activities unite even the most diverse interests," Taylor said. "The Inner City Sportsmen Club is simply doing a great job to help build the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts in Wisconsin."

Founded in 2011, the club has about 60 members from age 12 to 90. There is no membership fee.

The club's members gather for periodic fishing and hunting outings. They also hold spring and winter fishing clinics for the public in Milwaukee.

Six club members are certified Wisconsin Hunter Education Instructors and lead hunter safety classes.

The club also holds an annual fish fry at a city park.

The state citation noted this event by offering "sincerest salutations in reverence of their Annual Fish Fry."
