Prep football: Level 2 playoff preview.

DIVISION 1

Games at 7 p.m. Friday Marquette (6-4) at Kimberly (10-0): Marquette has been a much more productive team offensively since senior Josh Horning returned from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for four games. The Hilltoppers have won six of seven since their 0-3 start, but the Papermakers are, of course, a different animal. The winner of state titles the past four years, the team has won 66 straight games. Arrowhead (7-3) at Fond du Lac (8-2): Arrowhead has sort of been forgotten since their blowout loss to Muskego in Week 2, but in the last five weeks the defense has shown improvement. Take away a 35-point showing by undefeated Waukesha West Sept. 29 and the unit has given up an average of 191 yards of total offense and 4.5 points per game during that stretch. Fond du Lac shared the Valley Football Association South title with Neenah. Kettle Moraine (7-3) at Sun Prairie (10-0): Sun Prairie, the Big Eight champion, defeated Verona, 31-9, in Week 7. Kettle Moraine beat Verona, 28-19, in Level 1 of the playoffs, though the Lasers outscored the Wildcats, 28-9, during the final three quarters. This also will be a test for Sun Prairie, which will be playing its first game outside its conference. Lake Geneva Badger (9-1) at Franklin (9-1): This has the makings of a classic showdown. Both squads have players who have been key to deep playoff runs the past two years. In fact, both programs have been to at least the state semifinals the past two years. The teams have three common opponents: Wilmot, Waterford and Kenosha Bradford. Franklin went 3-0 against those teams. Badger went 3-1. Muskego (7-3) at Racine Horlick (10-0): If you like a ground-and-pound brand of football then this is your game. Horlick averages just six passes per game. Muskego is throwing it just 4.7 per contest. Horlick gave a handful of its starters, including leading rushers Joe Garcia and George Sims, last week off. Will the extra rest pay off or will some rust show?

DIVISION 2

Slinger (7-3) at Waunakee (10-0): Slinger will have its hands full containing Javian Dayne, the son of former University of Wisconsin star Ron Dayne and a 6-foot, 230-pound senior with 1,564 yards and 8.7 yards per carry. The Owls shouldn’t be star struck, though. Since a 35-7 loss to Whitefish Bay in the season opener, the team was on the cusp of breakthrough victories over Hartford and Homestead only to lose both games in the fourth quarter. Hartford (8-2) at Menasha (9-1): Hartford, which finished one game behind the North Shore co-champions Homestead and Whitefish Bay, is trying to advance past the second round for the first time since 2008. Helping the team get there will be senior quarterback Tristan Bradley, who has 1,556 passing yards. That's the most for an Orioles player in at least 12 years. Waterford (8-2) at Monona Grove (10-0): Waterford rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit to beat Burlington last week. Up next is the Badger South champion, which defeated Waterford’s Southern Lakes rival Wilmot, 42-12, last week. Waterford beat Wilmot, 24-13, Sept. 8. Stoughton (9-1) at Waukesha West (10-0): West missed out on a No. 1 seed in its portion of the bracket, but it can prove it should have received that distinction by advancing this week against the Badger South runner-up and then doing the same against No. 1 seed Monona Grove, the Badger South champion, in the state quarterfinals. Greenfield (5-5) at Brookfield Central (10-0): Greenfield defeated Milwaukee Bay View on the road last week, but moving the chains could prove hard for sophomore quarterback Omarion Bartlett and the rest of the Hawks attack. Central, which features Northern Illinois recruit Reggie Jennings at linebacker, is allowing just 6.7 points per game and last week against Milwaukee Reagan recorded its fifth shutout of the season.

Brookfield East (9-1) at Homestead (9-1): Teams this good usually don’t have second-round matchups this tough. Will the defending state champion win on the road or will Homestead return to the Level 3 of the playoffs for the sixth straight year? The one has the potential to be the game of the week in the area.

DIVISION 3

Green Bay Notre Dame (8-2) at Kewaskum (10-0): In order to advance to the state quarterfinals for the third straight year, Kewaskum must stop Notre Dame junior Wes Glime, who has completed 60% of his passes for 1,722 yards. Kewaskum senior quarterback Tony Steger is 46 passing yards from 1,000 yards both rushing and passing. Pewaukee (8-2) at New Berlin Eisenhower (10-0): Eisenhower led Pewaukee, 31-0, in Week 2 before posting a 38-14 victory. The rematch will give us a chance to see how much ground, if any, the Pirates have made over the last two months. Eisenhower hasn’t been to Level 3 of the playoff since 2002. Mount Horeb/Barneveld (9-1) at Catholic Memorial (8-2): Mount Horeb/Barneveld’s only loss came to undefeated Waunakee, a Division 2 school. All but one of its other games have been decided by at least two touchdowns. Memorial will definitely keep its eye on Malik Winston, a junior with 1,707 yards and 27 touchdowns on 253 carries. Plymouth (7-3) at Whitefish Bay (9-1): Bay has been shaky the last two weeks, losing to Hartford in the rain in Week 9 and holding off Milwaukee Lutheran for a 43-36 victory last week. Up next is a Panthers squad that played Level 1 survivors New Berlin Eisenhower, Kewaskum and Berlin well in losses. Whitnall (9-1) at Greendale (8-2): These Woodland rivals both have a loss to New Berlin Eisenhower. Whitnall lost, 45-14, on Oct. 12. Greendale lost, 31-0, on Sept. 8 but hasn’t lost since then. Both team’s quarterbacks, Whitnall senior Jacob Flores and Greendale senior Mitchell Gnadt, had at least 290 yards of total offense last week.

DIVISION 4

Lake Mills (9-1) vs. Racine St. Catherine’s (10-0) at Union Grove: Lake Mills, the Capitol North runner-up, outscored Lakeside Lutheran, 14-0, in the second half last week to escape with a 42-26 victory. With that said, the 399 rushing yards the L-Cats gave up have to be a cause for concern. St. Catherine’s junior Da’Shaun Brown (1,159) and Isaiah Dodd (1.122) lead an attack that averages 9.3 yards per carry. Greendale Martin Luther (6-4) at Kiel (8-2): The Spartans scored one of the upsets of the week by knocking off No. 3 seed University School, 42-7, after losing to the Wildcats, 14-7, in Week 2. To beat the Eastern Wisconsin runner-up, job No. 1 for Martin Luther will be containing senior quarterback Max Feldmann, who has 2,200 yards of total offense.

DIVISION 5

Westby (6-4) at Lake Country Lutheran (10-0): Westby avenged a 56-34 loss to Lancaster in Week 3 with a 38-29 victory last week. Lake Country is trying to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in three years. If Westby is to pull the upset, it will have to figure out how to keep the Lightning out of the backfield. The team has a whopping 49 sacks, led by sophomore linebacker Jack Leverenz's nine, and 124 tackles for a loss.

DIVISION 6

Manitowoc Lutheran (8-2) vs. Racine Lutheran (9-1) at Kenosha Indian Trail: Racine Lutheran is coming off its first playoff victory since 2009. The Crusaders' run game and sophomore Tyler Tenner have hit their stride. Tenner has gained 513 of his 1,485 yards in the last three games. Manitowoc Lutheran finished third in the Big East.
