We Energies’ ‘Cookie Book’ is ready for distribution

- Nancy Stohs Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Once again, We Energies feeds our love for cookies with release of its annual Cookie Book.

For this year’s collection, the utility company chose the theme “Celebrating Wisconsin Products.” Recipes in the 28-page book all contain products from our state, everything from butter to cherries, cranberries, honey, maple and various cheeses, even goat cheese.

The large-format, glossy spiral-bound book is being distributed free at events that started this week and conclude Nov. 17. Milwaukee’s signature event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday in the parking lot of Miller Park near Helfaer Field.

All 31 cookies were professionally tested, styled and photographed for the book. The recipes came from state food growers, producers and others with a connection to food.

There are Chocolate Cherry Stout Cookies from local beer writer Lucy Saunders, for example. On-the-Road Cowboy Cookies from “Wisconsin Foodie” host Kyle Cherek. Nutty Cherry Delight Cookies and Mila’s Kisses from Anna Bakalinsky of Mila’s European Bakery.

The Cookie Book is being distributed at various locations around the state. A big event similar to the one in Milwaukee will be held at the same time in Appleton in the Fox Cities/Timber Rattlers Stadium parking lot.

Those two events will include hot cocoa and a photo op with Santa’s reindeer. The schedule for remaining events in areas of Wisconsin served by We Energies can be found at the utility's website.

A PDF of the cookie book is also available at the website for those who wish to download the book at home.

Quick history: The cookie book was revived by the utility company in 2006 after a lapse of a couple of decades. From about 1928 to the 1970s, the former gas and electric companies produced and distributed cookie or holiday recipes every year in what had become a cherished Milwaukee tradition. Curious customers will find decades’ worth of old editions scanned in online, dating back to 1932.

For any questions about the book, please contact We Energies. (Readers every year mistakenly assume the Journal Sentinel produces this book; we do not.)
