Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival

The 32nd annual festival continues through the week at UWM Union Cinema, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. Unless noted, tickets are $5 and free for UWM students. The festival runs through Nov. 12; here are this week’s screenings. Friday: 7 p.m., “They,” about a teenager in suburban Chicago who has to decide whether make a planned gender transition a reality; 9 p.m., “Cruising. And Mom: Our Annual Men’s Shorts Program.” Saturday: 5 p.m., “Brothers — Season 1 and Season 2 Preview,” short-form digital series about a group of transgender male friends, with series creator, Emmett J. Lundberg, producer Sheyam Ghieth and star Syd Michael Robinson in attendance; 7 p.m., “I Dream in Another Language,” a young linguist tries to bring together the last two estranged speakers of a dying indigenous language (in Spanish with English subtitles); 9 p.m., “‘And You Are?’ An Evening of Women’s Shorts.” Sunday: 5 p.m., “Small Talk,” a drama about a professional mourner whose daughter is trying to reconnect with her (in Taiwanese with English subtitles); 7 p.m., “4 Days in France,” after a couple split up, one travels the country in search of hookups while the other goes in search of him — both by using the gay dating app Grindr (in French with English subtitles). Monday: 7 p.m., “An Evening With Faythe Levine: Bar Dykes and Other Communal Acts,” with artist-historian Levine on hand to talk about her research into queer history and show several short films; free admission. Tuesday: 7 p.m., “Chris E. Vargas and His Video Work: Under ‘Construction’,” video artist Vargas will be on hand to show his works, focusing on how queer and trans people negotiate their place in popular culture; free admission. Wednesday: 7 p.m., “BPM (Beats Per Minute),” the festival’s centerpiece film, set against the rise of HIV/ AIDS activism in Paris in the early 1990s (in French with English subtitles).
