Dogfish Head co-founder makes a splash at show
If there was a record for selfies taken at Potawatomi Casino Conference Center, it was crushed last week thanks to an appearance by Sam Calagione, cofounder of Delaware-based Dogfish Head Brewery.
Calagione, who won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional this year, is known as one of craft beer’s chief evangelists. He was in town for the Beechwood Sales & Service annual trade show, where he manned a booth to chat with retailers and, of course, pose for photos.
If you see more Dogfish Head brews on tap around town, now you’ll know why.
Here are some beer events to keep in mind this week:
Friday: The Brass Tap, 7808 W. Layton Ave., Greenfield, celebrates International Stout Day with, um, lots of stouts, including Founders KBS; the collaboration Cherry Chocolate Stout from Explorium and Cigar City; Oskar Blues Ten Fidy; and more from 4 to 11 p.m., according to the event page on Facebook. Saturday-Sunday: The Journal Sentinel hosts the Food & Wine Experience at the Wisconsin Center. As part of the celebration of food, wine and adult beverages, I’ll host a talk with Jim McCabe, founder of Milwaukee Brewing Co., at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.
Saturday: Karben4 Brewing and the Pink Boots Society present The Science of Brewing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Karben4, 3698 Kinsman Blvd., Madison. The event is free, but a rare beer tasting during it costs $10, according to the event page on Facebook.
Monday: Stubby’s Gastrogrub & Beer Bar, 2060 N. Humboldt Ave., will break out Founders KBS from Michigan and Black Gold from Central Waters at 5 and 6 p.m. during the Packers-Lions game, according to the event page on Facebook.
Thursday: Brew City MKE, 275 W. Wisconsin Ave., offers its own version of “Behind the Beer.” This one concentrates on “Beer, Barrels and Beyond.” Dee Gedlen offers the story and samples of Louie’s Demise and Louie’s Resurrection from Milwaukee Brewing Co. at 6 p.m., according to the event page on Facebook.
