Man arrested in Kenosha County home invasion

- Ashley Luthern

A 52-year-old man with a long criminal history randomly targeted a Kenosha County couple for a home invasion when he found an unlocked door in the breezeway, authorities said Monday.

Daniel Evans was arrested Friday after a police chase and faces a slew of possible felony charges, including attempted first-degree homicide, according to information released by the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

Evans, who has a crack cocaine addiction, was checking houses in the Village of Somers on the night of Oct. 27 when he found the open breezeway door, went inside and then broke glass to get into the main house, Sheriff David Beth told reporters during a news conference.

The sound woke the 84-year-old homeowner who went to investigate and was shot twice in the shoulder by Evans, according to the department.

The homeowner’s 83-year-old wife also suffered head injuries during the encounter at their residence in the 3700 block of 18th St. (Highway L).

The couple’s cellphones were taken in the robbery and authorities traced them to a retail area where Evans was seen on security footage getting into a stolen car, Beth said during the news conference.

Deputies had Evans under surveillance Friday at a mobile home park and tried to pull him over when he got into a stolen Lexus with several other adults and one child, according to the department.

Evans led deputies on a 10-mile chase into Racine County before crashing at Highway KR and 22nd Ave. in Kenosha County.

Evans was released from prison on Feb. 21 and is on extended supervision for battery to law officers. He has prior convictions for burglary, assault, robbery and escape.

Based on what Evans told detectives, “he learned to fine-tune his home invasions while in prison,” Beth said.

Evans could make his first court appearance as soon as Wednesday.
