UW men advance in soccer

Mike Catalano scored on a header 4 minutes, 46 seconds into overtime and the Wisconsin men’s soccer team stunned 12th-seeded Notre Dame, 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

The Badgers (12-4-5) will play at fifth-seeded Akron (17-3-1) in a third-round match on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Catalano knocked the ball into the corner of the net from point-blank range.

UW senior goalkeeper Philip Schilling finished with four saves.

"It's exciting for the guys to be moving onto the round of 16,” said Badgers coach John Trask. “To have a performanc­e like this on three days rest against a very good Notre Dame team is phenomenal.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UCLA fired football coach Jim Mora on Sunday with one regular-season game left in his sixth season.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced the shocking move one day after rival Southern California’s 28-23 victory over UCLA (5-6, 3-5 Pac-12). Offensive coordinato­r Jedd Fisch will coach the Bruins in their regular-season home finale against California on Friday night.

UCLA must pay more than $12 million to buy out the remainder of Mora’s contract, which runs through 2021. The Bruins fired Mora on his 56th birthday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Allazia Blockton scored 19 points and Erika Davenport added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 16 Marquette to an 83-63 victory over Loyola-Maryland at the Al McGuire Center.

GOLF

Rookie Austin Cook won the RSM Classic without being seriously challenged, closing with two birdies for a 3-under 67 and a four-shot victory in St. Simons Island, Ga. LPGA Tour: Ariya Jutanugarn holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Lexi Thompson in the CME Group Tour Championsh­ip in Naples, Fla.

TENNIS

Pancho Segura, who rose from poverty to win six U.S. Pro singles and doubles championsh­ips and was one of the world’s greatest tennis players in the 1950s, died at the age of 96.

Segura died Saturday from complicati­ons of Parkinson’s disease at his home at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
