Woods trails by five strokes

-

One of the biggest cheers at the Hero World Challenge was seeing the name Tiger Woods go to the top of the leader board. It just didn’t stay there for long.

Woods built on a solid start in his return to golf by shooting 31 on the front nine at Albany Golf Club, only to stall on the back nine for a 4-under 68. By the end of the second round Friday, he was five shots behind Charley Hoffman, who shot 63.

Hoffman made 12 birdies on another breezy afternoon in Nassau, Bahamas, to take a three-shot the lead into the weekend over Jordan Spieth (67) and Tommy Fleetwood (69).

Woods, playing for the first time in 10 months because of his fourth back surgery, was tied for fifth.

VOLLEYBALL

Kelli Bates, Dana Rettke and Grace Loberg had 11 kills apiece to lead Wisconsin to a 27-25, 25-21, 25-11 victory over Marquette in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday in Ames, Iowa.

The Badgers (21-9) will face host Iowa State (22-6) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Marquette finished the year at 22-10.

The Panthers (4-2) outscored the Bison, 26-4, in the second quarter.

SOCCER

Ian Bennett scored four goals to carry the Milwaukee Wave to an 11-7 victory over the Kansas City Comets at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

SKIING

Lindsey Vonn fell and crashed into the safety netting on the final turn in the women’s seasonopening World Cup downhill in Lake Louise, Alberta, handing Austria’s Cornelia Huetter the victory.

An 18-time winner at Lake Louise, Vonn was able to get up and ski to the bottom of the course. She was the fastest at each of the four intermediate stages before wiping out.
