Woods fades in Hero event

-

That’s not what Tiger Woods expected. After two rounds of the Hero World Challenge, when the former world No. 1 stirred the masses over with thrilling play following a 10-month absence, Woods was in position to win for the first time since in 2013.

Rounds of 69 and 68 left him five shots out of the lead and in a tie for fifth in a tournament that lured eight of the top-10 players in the world.

But from the get-go in Saturday’s third round at windswept Albany Golf Course in Nassau Bahamas, Woods was out of sync and quickly out of any chance to win the tournament.

He made four bogeys in his first seven holes in the third round, five in his first 10. While he finished well with two birdies in his final five holes, he still signed for a 3-over-par 75 that left him at 4 under through 54 holes and 10 shots out of the lead set by Charley Hoffman, who shot 70.

The Philadelphi Eagles won’t have to worry about Alshon Jeffery becoming a free agent.

That’s because the wide receiver agreed to a four-year contract extension worth a reported $52 million, with $27 million guaranteed, on Saturday morning.

Jeffery had signed a one-year contract last March as a free agent after spending his first five seasons with the Chicago Bears.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Scott Frost will return to Nebraska, his alma mater, as football coach and get a seven-year deal that will pay approximately $35 million.

Frost led Central Florida to an 11-0 regular season and into the American Athletic Conference Championship game. He was Nebraska’s No. 1 target well before the Huskers let Mike Riley go.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Cayla McMorris and Marsha Howard both had double-doubles, helping Wisconsin get past LaSalle, 72-60.

McMorris had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Howard had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Wisconsin (5-3) shot 50% in the game and never trailed.

HOCKEY

Jusse Suaros stopped 26 of 28 shots, but Aaron Ness and Mathias Bau scored in the first and second periods to fuel host Hershey’s 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday night.

The Admirals (11-9-1) had power-play chances in the second and third periods but came up empty. Hershey defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler scored into an empty net with 1:10 remaining.

COLLEGE HOCKEY

Trent Frederic’s goal at the 10:40 mark of the third period gave the visiting Wisconsin Badgers a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night.

Seamus Malone and Matthew Freytag also scored goals for the Badgers (10-7-2, 3-3-1 Big Ten). From Journal Sentinel wire services
