State’s favorite Christmas candy isn’t too Christmasy

Christmas is a time for traditions and familiar comforts — evergreens, lights, stockings and … Pez?

Forget candy canes, chocolate Santas and peppermint bark. Pez, those chalky tablets ejected from the necks of plastic cartoon heads, are the Christmas candy king in Wisconsin.

That’s according to Candy-Store. com, an online bulk candy distributor that surveyed 50,000 of its customers to find the top holiday treat in every state.

Pez was a favorite in seven other states in addition to Wisconsin. It’s only slightly less Christmasy than Wisconsin’s second top candy, Jolly Ranchers, which was the favorite in Illinois, Minnesota and Washington, D.C.

Michigan continues its streak of terrible taste in candy and chose reindeer corn as its favorite sweet. Yes, corn. In an affront to everything that Christmas represents — hope, happiness, eating the best-tasting and most-fattening foods possible — the abomination that is candy corn apparently has a holiday version.

Pez and M&Ms tied for being the favorite in the most states, eight. Candy canes were a favorite in seven states.

Holiday candy sales are expected to top $1.93 billion this year, according to the National Confectionary Association, the website reported. That includes 1.76 billion candy canes and 150 million chocolate Santas.

Candy canes are the bestselling non-chocolate candy in December, with Dec. 26 being dubbed National Candy Cane Day.
