Cookie cookbook for sale

Mount Carmel Lutheran Church is marking the holiday season not with a cookie sale but with a 75th anniversary cookie cookbook, “Mount Carmel’s Cookie Jar.”

The 80-page spiral-bound book, with 116 recipes, comes 40 years after the first “Cookie Jar” book was published by the congregation at 8424 W. Center St., where cookies are a tradition.

For Lutherans, the introduction explains, “coffee is a staple between services on Sunday, and an array of homebaked cookies is part of the picture.”

In addition to submissions from church members, the book features recipes from that earlier book (marked with a star) plus cookie favorites from James Beard Award-winning chefs Sandy D’Amato, Justin Aprahamian (Sanford) and Adam Siegel (Lake Park Bistro), pastry chefs Matt Haase (Ardent) and Ellen Cummings Hyde (Quad Graphics), as well as Milwaukee magazine dining critic Ann Christensen and Journal Sentinel food editor Nancy Stohs.

Cookbooks sell for $10 (plus $3 shipping); mailing a check to the church at 8424 W. Center St., Milwaukee, WI 53222 with your name and mailing address; phone (414) 771-1270.

Cookie potluck idea

For cookie fun at the workplace, you could do what 20 members of the pulmonary department at St. Luke’s Hospital did. Each participant baked a different cookie from this year’s We Energies’ Cookie Book.

On Monday, they spread the cookies out in the department conference room for sampling. The discerning cookie eaters rated the cookies according to which they themselves would make and which they liked best.
