Goodell signs five-year extension

-

The NFL’s compensation committee informed owners in a memo Wednesday that commissioner Roger Goodell has signed a contract extension.

According to the memo, which was obtained by USA TODAY Sports, the extension was signed by Goodell and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who heads the league’s compensation committee. The memo also cited a “nearly unanimous consensus” among NFL owners who supported finalizing the deal.

Goodell, whose previous deal ran through 2019 and paid him $31.7 million in 2015, the last year for which his salary was reported. The New York Times reported that the extension is for five years.

The compensation committee faced criticism along the way from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who threatened to sue his fellow owners in order to prevent the completion of the deal.

NFL to consider targeting reviews: The NFL will look into adding targeting as a specific category for video review. Troy Vincent, the league’s football operations chief, says it is on the agenda to discuss with the competition committee and the players’ union.

In responding to questions about helmet-to-helmet hits and players launching to make tackles, Vincent said the NFL has seen targeting reviews “work to a degree” in the college game.

“We think there have been some positives and we have talked to some of the conferences and the officials there, as well as with some student-athletes,” Vincent said. “It is a deterrent and something that we will consider.” Manning will start for Giants: Eli Manning is back as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback.

A week after being benched by former coach Ben McAdoo, Manning, 36, was put back into the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys by interim coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Moon accused of sexual harassment: Former NFL quarterback Warren Moon is being sued for sexual harassment.

Wendy Haskell, who was hired as an executive assistant to Moon claims Moon wanted her to share his bed during business trips. The suit also claims that she was demoted when she complained to the company Sports 1 Marketing, owned by Moon, about his advances.
