Contract extension reportedly Goodell’s final deal

-

Commissioner Roger Goodell views the agreement reached on an extension last week as his final contract overseeing the NFL, a league spokesman said Wednesday.

Goodell’s extension through 2024 will allow him to help negotiate a new labor deal when the current collective bargaining agreement expires in 2021, and have a hand in talks over new broadcast contracts, spokesman Joe Lockhart said when announcing details of the deal signed last week.

“The commissioner I think has been clear that he views this as his last contract and will allow him to deal with some of the important issues that we know are on the horizon,” Lockhart said at the Irving, Texas, hotel where the NFL owners meetings were held.

A person with knowledge of the agreement has told The Associated Press the five-year extension is worth almost $200 million with a base salary of $40 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the figures are not made public.

Falcons great Nobis dies: Tommy Nobis, a hard-hitting middle linebacker who was the first player drafted by the expansion Atlanta Falcons, died Wednesday. He was 74.

The team said he died at his suburban Atlanta home after an extended illness with his wife, Lynn, at his side.

Nobis earned NFL rookie of the year honors and the first of five Pro Bowl berths in 1966, and would go on to spend his entire 11-year career with the Falcons.

Bengals co-founder dies: Pete Brown, who helped form the Bengals franchise and served in the team’s personnel department, has died at the age of 74.

The team announced his death without further details. His funeral will be private.

Pete Brown was the son of Paul Brown and the younger brother of Mike Brown. He was part of the team’s player personnel department since its founding in the 1960s.

Redskins shelve Reed: The Washington Redskins have decided to shut down Jordan Reed, putting the tight end on season-ending injured reserve.

The team announced the move Tuesday. Reed has missed the past six games with a strained right hamstring.

It was another lost season for the 27year-old, who went into training camp dealing with an injury to his big left toe and also missed a game with a bruised chest. He had just 27 catches for 211 yards and two touchdowns in six games.
