Mount Union wins title

-

D’Angelo Fulford hit Justin Hill for a 42-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, and Mount Union won its 13th NCAA Division III football championship with a 12-0 victory over defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor in the Stagg Bowl on Friday night in Salem, Va.

The Purple Raiders (15-0) limited Mary HardinBaylor to 144 yards. Mount Union led just 3-0 until Fulford found Hill just behind defensive backs Reginald Cole and Jefferson Fritz. It was the 50th scoring pass of the season for the sophomore and Hill’s 20th touchdown catch.

The Crusaders (14-1) had not trailed all season and had their 29-game winning streak snapped. They also were shut out for just the second time in the 20-year history of their program. The only other was a 28-0 loss to Mississippi College on Oct. 17, 1998, the first season Mary Hardin-Baylor fielded a team.

HOCKEY

Sam Anas scored 1 minute, 55 seconds into overtime and the Iowa Wild outlasted the Milwaukee Admirals, 3-2, Friday night at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

Anas finished with two goals for the Wild. Trevor Smith and Emil Pettersson tallied for the Admirals.

SKIING

Early starter Josef Ferstl put down a nearly flawless run in a fog-interrupted super-G in Selva di Val Gardena, Italy, to become the first German man to win a World Cup speed event in 13 years.

The previous German man to win a speed race — downhill or super-G — was Max Rauffer in a downhill on the Saslong in 2004. In super-G, the German drought had stretched all the way back to 1991, when Markus Wasmeier won in Lake Louise, Alberta.

SNOWBOARDING

Colorado halfpipe rider Jake Pates came from out of nowhere to win the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, Colo., and put himself in position to make the U.S. Olympic team.

Pates, a 19-year-old, landed his version of a Double McTwist 1260 — the jump Shaun White brought to the sport eight years ago — to score 97.33 in the final and win the second of four qualifying events for the U.S. team.

White wiped out during his two qualifying runs Thursday and did not make the final, but is still in good shape to make the Olympics.
