Kenosha cancels polar plunge

With temperatures and wind chills plunging to dangerously low temperatures, organizers of the Kenosha polar bear plunge have canceled the event for New Year’s morning.

A message on the website of Diver Dan’s Scuba & Aquatic Center in Kenosha reported that the decision to cancel was based on the cold wind chills. The event is normally held at 11 a.m. in Lake Michigan on New Year’s Day.

The Milwaukee Polar Bear Plunge at noon Monday in Lake Michigan is still scheduled, though a message on the website warns:

polarplungemilwaukee.com Due to the extreme cold conditions expected on January 1st, 2018 it is recommended by medical professionals that you do not participate in this event. There are several other Polar Plunges in 2018 when the weather conditions may be more favorable. If you choose to participate, you are doing so at your own risk.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for Sunday evening into New Year’s Day and warned it may issue another advisory Monday evening through Tuesday because the deep freeze is expected to stick around.

High temperatures will rise only to the single digits to lower teens, with lows of 5 above to 10 below zero. Wind chill values will be minus 20 to minus 30 degrees at times over the next several days.
