Seahawks fire Bevell

What’s expected to be an off-season makeover for the Seattle Seahawks is starting with its coaching staff.

The Seahawks fired offensive coordinato­r Darrell Bevell and offensive line coach Tom Cable on Wednesday. Bevell was in charge of calling plays, while Cable was responsibl­e for a run game and offensive line that failed to meet expectatio­ns.

It was a stunning sweep for head coach Pete Carroll, who has been immensely loyal to his assistants during his tenure.

Carroll’s only other significan­t firing was offensive coordinato­r Jeremy Bates following the 2010 season, Carroll’s first in Seattle.

NFL

Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker Ryan Shazier attended practice for the first time since injuring his spine against Cincinnati last month.

Shazier posted a photo on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon from the team’s indoor training facility as Pittsburgh prepared to host Jacksonvil­le in the divisional round of the playoffs. Shazier, who underwent spine stabilizat­ion surgery on Dec. 6, is pictured in a wheelchair wearing sweatpants and a Steelers jacket.

BASEBALL

Slugger Khris Davis and the Oakland Athletics agreed to a $10.5 million, one-year contract, more than doubling his salary after he beat the team in arbitratio­n last winter.

Davis is Oakland’s slugging centerpiec­e. He hit a career-best 43 home runs last season.

TENNIS

Serena Williams told Vogue that she dealt with a medical scare right after the birth of her daughter.

In a story in the magazine’s February issue and posted Wednesday on Vogue.com, Williams discusses developing several small blood clots in her lungs while in the hospital after Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. was born in September.

According to the article, the tennis superstar “spent the first six weeks of motherhood unable to get out of bed.”

NBA

The NBA suspended Miami Heat forward James Johnson and Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka one game apiece for throwing punches at each.

The fight began with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter of the Heat’s 90-89 victory over the Raptors on Tuesday night in Toronto. Ibaka and Johnson started shoving each other while waiting for the ball to be inbounded under the Miami basket.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The Marquette women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 77-60 victory over host Providence on Wednesday night.

Danielle King led four players in double figures for Marquette (11-5, 5-0 Big East) with 21 points. Erika Davenport added 10 points and 17 boards.

Texas player has leukemia: Texas sophomore guard Andrew Jones has leukemia and started treatment, the school announced Wednesday.

Jones led the team in scoring with a 15-point average before breaking his wrist in December. He played sparingly in his return in late December after complainin­g of low energy and was sent for tests.

Hoosiers lose center: Indiana center De’Ron Davis will miss the rest of the season after having surgery for a torn Achilles’ tendon.

Coach Archie Miller said Davis injured his lower right leg in Thursday’s practice.

HOCKEY

Trevor Murphy notched his fourth goal of the season and goalie Juuse Saros was big in net as the Milwaukee Admirals struck down the Cleveland Monsters, 1-0, on Wednesday night at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

Murphy gave the Admirals the only goal they needed at 8:19 of the second period.

The was all Saros needed as he stopped all 26 shots send his way.
