PGA players get scare
Charles Howell III was eating breakfast in his hotel when the restaurant started buzzing.
Everyone had their phones. Everyone received the same push alert.
“BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
The scare lasted only about 10 minutes, but it was long enough to create an unsettling start to the third round of the Sony Open.
When play got underway, Tom Hoge fired a 6under 64 to take a one-shot lead over Patton Kizzire and Brian Harmann with a three-round total of 16-under.
MLB
The World Series champion Houston Astros have boosted their rotation with another big arm, acquiring Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz, third baseman Colin Moran and outfielder Jason Martin for their ace.
Cole will join former Cy Young Award winners
Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander on a team that just won its first championship.
New deal for Hand: All-star closer Brad Hand and the San Diego Padres agreed to a three-year contraction extension Saturday reportedly worth $19.75 million.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Jamie Reit hit a jumper with 1 second remaining to cap a late comeback by the UW-Milwaukee women’s team in a 62-61 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers (12-5, 3-2 Horizon League) found themselves down, 61-55, with 3:28 to go against the Penguins (6-11, 2-4), but they proceded to close the game on a 7-0 run, with Jenny Lindner’s threepointer starting the comeback followed by two free throws from Steph Kostowicz and Reit’s gamewinner.
COLLEGE HOCKEY
Trent Frederic’s short-handed goal at 16:54 of the second period put Wisconsin ahead to stay as they skated away from Michigan State for a 5-2 victory at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.
Ryan Wagner and JD Greenway added goals in the first 2:18 of the third period to put UW (11-11-3, 5-7-2-0 Big Ten) comfortably ahead.
UW women 6, Minnesota State 0: Six different players scored goals for the top-ranked Badgers (221-0, 13-0-0-0 WCHA), and Kristen Campbell stopped all 16 shots she faced against the Mavericks at the LaBahn Arena in Madison.
BOBSLEDDING
Lauren Gibbs and Aja Evans were picked Saturday as the push athletes who will join pilots Elana
Meyers Taylor and Jamie Greubel Poser on the U.S. Olympic women’s bobsled team.
Gibbs will be in Meyers Taylor’s sled at the Pyeongchang Games. Evans will push for Greubel Poser, a combination that earned the U.S. a bronze medal at the Sochi Games four years ago – as well as a gold medal in a World Cup race at the Olympic track in South Korea last season.
Lolo Jones, who pushed Meyers Taylor to a World Cup gold earlier Saturday in St. Moritz, Switzerland, did not make the team.
SKIING
Beat Feuz won the Lauberhorn downhill on Saturday in Wengen, Switzerland, to give the host country yet another victory in its signature Alpine skiing race.
Racing first, Feuz set a time of 2:26.50 on the longest World Cup course of 4.27 kilometers (2.65 miles) that only Aksel Lund Svindal could threaten (0.18 seconds behind).
SNOWBOARDING
Shaun White made the U.S. Olympic team in grand fashion — scoring a perfect 100 at the U.S. Grand Prix event in Snowmass, Colo., to set himself up as a favorite to win a third gold medal.
Ben Ferguson finished fifth to secure his spot; he’ll join White and Jake Pates on the Olympic team.
