More breakfast on menu

- RESTAURANT NEWS WITH CAROL DEPTOLLA

A breakfast-and-lunch restaurant, Fiesta Cafe, is taking over the vacant Wayward Kitchen Co. property at 1407 S. 1st St., with plans to serve organic eggs, fresh juices and baskets of sweet Mexican breads on the tables.

It likely will open by the second weekend in March, said Valdemar Escobar. His wife, Rosa-Isela Real, is the owner.

The restaurant, which is installing overhead garage doors to open in warm weather, will serve American breakfast and lunch dishes and some Mexican plates, Escobar said.

Real and Escobar own Fat Valdy’s, a Mexican seafood restaurant at 5108 W. Blue Mound Road, and fast-casual Chicken Palace, which sells grilled chicken, tacos and other dishes at 1957 W. Forest Home Ave.

Escobar noted that the Forest Home location previously was Eagle’s Nest restaurant, which they began operating in 1995 and where they also served breakfast.

Skillets, pancakes, salads, sandwiches and other dishes will range from $8 to $15. Takeout will be available.

Fiesta Cafe will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily; it might open for dinner eventually, Escobar said.

Escobar said Real was drawn to the booming neighborhood because of new apartments and businesses and more traffic. And, he said, “It looks like breakfast is coming back again.”

Although breakfast-lunch spot Zak’s Cafe closed at 231 S. 2nd St. last year, brunch restaurant Toast is opening in its place in March. The neighborhood also has Engine Company No. 3, 217 W. National Ave.

Snack Boys opening

Snack Boys Snack Bar now will open Friday. The restaurant, 814 S. 2nd St., was to debut Wednesday, but a Facebook post said the opening was delayed for staff training.

Snack Boys will be open for dinner Wednesdays to Sundays, with most snacks $3 to $12.
